Discover Yecla, Located in Spain's Murcia Provence
Yecla derived its unusual name from the Arabic for the fortress that used to be part of the town and of which only ruins now remain. The fortress was constructed partly due to the town’s elevation, about 600 metres above seas level. Some 35,000 people live here, in the central Murcia region about an hours’ drive from the regional capital and the airport. The economy used to be mainly agricultural but there has been a thriving furniture and carpentry industry developed over the last 50 years or so with products from here sought across Spain.
As you would expect from a town of this age there are plenty of historical sites to see, including the Gothic style church, the ruined castle from the 11th century and a nearby world heritage site with prehistoric cave paintings.
As with almost all Spanish towns with a population of more than a thousand or so, there is a lively programme of fiestas and other events which the local town hall or tourist office will be happy to give you more information about. There is a good choice of bars and restaurants, and many people say the best advice for newcomers is to simply keep an eye out for where the locals are eating.
The region of Murcia is on the Costa Calida which, appropriately, means “warm coast”, reflecting both the climate and warm waters of the area. It is a popular area for Europeans to live and visit, offering beautiful beaches and mountains for activities ranging from water sports to hiking.
Murcia City is a thriving municipality of 400,000 or so people with a wide range of places to eat, drink and shop as well as having the nearby airport. The Costa Calida and Costa Blanca both have a number of golf courses, ranging from international standard to those more suitable for beginners. The area is perfect for families, retirees and younger people starting out to make a new life, offering something for everyone, both inland and on the coast.
