As we are approaching the beautiful cherry season in Spain we wanted to write this article for you to know more about this season and the benefits of cherries.
Spain is the second largest producer of cherries in Europe and the seventh largest producer in the world. The autonomous communities that produce the most are Extremadura, Aragon, Catalonia and Castilla y Leon. It is one of our national foods of quality, since Spain has two quality types: PDO Cherries of Jerte and IGP Cherries of the Mountains of Alicante.
In Spain, the cherry season runs from May to July, although some early harvests can be enjoyed in April as well. During the month of March the trees begin to blossom which makes a spectacular scenery in the Spanish countryside which is a must see due to being a short crop.

Many of the Spanish villages will celebrate a cherry festival welcoming visitors from all over Spain offering their fresh produce using the local cherries: honey, , wine, marmalade, homemade desserts and also many other produce like olive oils, pastries and typical local dishes.
The recommended serving of cherries is 1 small plate or 18 units per day. It is very important that you wash and dry the cherries just before consuming them.
