As we are approaching the beautiful cherry season in Spain we wanted to write this article for you to know more about this season and the benefits of cherries.

 Spain is the second largest producer of cherries in Europe and the seventh largest producer in the world. The autonomous communities that produce the most are Extremadura, Aragon, Catalonia and Castilla y Leon. It is one of our national foods of quality, since Spain has two quality types: PDO Cherries of Jerte and IGP Cherries of the Mountains of Alicante.

In Spain, the cherry season runs from May to July, although some early harvests can be enjoyed in April as well. During the month of March the trees begin to blossom which makes a spectacular scenery in the Spanish countryside which is a must see due to being a short crop.

Many of the Spanish villages will celebrate a cherry festival welcoming visitors from all over Spain offering their fresh produce using the local cherries: honey, , wine, marmalade, homemade desserts and also many other produce like olive oils, pastries and typical local dishes. 

The recommended serving of cherries is 1 small plate or 18 units per day. It is very important that you wash and dry the cherries just before consuming them. 

HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATHING CHERRIES 

Cherries are included in the superfruit category because they are loaded with antioxidants  which help reduce heart disease and serve to counteract the processes that lead to cancer. Additionally, cherries are one of the few food sources containing melatonin  which helps regulate the heart rate and the body's sleep cycles.

They are an excellent source of vitamin A. Cherries contain 19 times more beta-carotene than blueberries and strawberries. In addition to vitamin A, cherries are rich in vitamins C, E, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, folic acid (B9), and fiber .

A healthy mind. Cherries are known as the " brain food " as it helps maintain good brain health and prevent memory loss. 

Cherries have anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-tumour effects, which can benefit many people. It has also been shown to be useful in treating obesity. 
Due to its anti-inflammatory benefits , cherries can help reduce pain. They are highly recommended for pain in the muscles and tendons therefore, if you practice a sport, if you go cycling or running, cherries can help you recover after. 

A cup of cherries has just 87 calories, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein and 3 grams of fiber. Due to the low calories cherries make a good snack.
